FirmGreen Rolls Out Renewable CNG Fleet Services

FirmGreen Helps Fleets Capitalize on Transition to Alternative Fuels

NEWPORT BEACH, CA – April 2, 2009   FirmGreen, Inc. (FGI) is rolling out programs to help Ohio fleets make the transition to alternative fuels with fuel, infrastructure and vehicles.  FirmGreen’s high Btu landfill gas utilization processing facility, located near Columbus, Ohio is the source of its gCNG™ fuel — FirmGreen’s brand name for compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel from renewable sources.

To help fleets make the transition to alternative fuel FirmGreen offers a variety of vehicle programs from CNG conversions to vehicle sales, vehicle leases, and long-term fuel contracts that include delivery of vehicles.  Fuel is obtained by processing landfill gas (LFG) to a purity that meets or exceeds OEM standards for biomethane.  The resulting biomethane is compressed, and piped to a main fuel dispensing operation adjacent FirmGreen’s LFG processing facility.  FirmGreen also has capability to deliver fuel offsite from its main fuel depot with a tube trailer system powered entirely by its own gCNG fuel.

"There’s less than a handful of landfills in the US where you can literally see the landfill gas go straight into vehicle’s tank – trash to treasure.” says FirmGreen Business Development Director Tony Wong.  “Our recent Project of the Year Award from the U.S. EPA demonstrates a tri-fecta opportunity; CO2 Wash can simultaneously help America reduce dependence on foreign oil, offer gCNG at less than diesel price, and reduce both harmful vehicle emissions and greenhouse gas.”

The gCNG fuel is being used by several fleets in the area: Grove City and Jackson Township have each taken delivery of an F-250 truck from FirmGreen.  Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) is fueling two Honda Civic vehicles and four ¾ ton trucks with gCNG obtained by processing LFG from the landfill they operate, with plans to expand their fleet of CNG vehicles.  The City of Columbus is fueling a waste hauler with the biomethane.  FirmGreen is currently finalizing additional agreements to supply fuel, infrastructure and vehicles to other local fleet operations and expand services with existing customers.

“We are very pleased to partner with FirmGreen for our new CNG truck.  We anticipate driving the vehicle about 8,000 miles per year and knowing that the fuel comes directly from the landfill in our own backyard is a reassuring feeling.” stated Michael Lilly, Jackson Township Administrator.

The fueling operation – dubbed Green Energy Center (GEC), demonstrates the technical and economic feasibility of combining forward thinking waste management with creation of an alternative fuel supply for area fleets.  The project has accomplished multiple goals with a facilities design that:

  • enables fleet operators to respond effectively to national environmental policy with respect to fleet emissions standards
  • demonstrates that biomethane production offers the ability to improve air quality at landfill sites, and provide a stable, long term source of alternative fuel for area fleets that is cleaner than the fossil-based fuel it replaces, at a competitive cost — with a single project!
  • is self-sustaining; a microturbine powered by a portion of the cleaned LFG generates enough electricity for the facility’s operations
